Wow, this is a thing? People are really so insensitive that they would make and ditch commissions? It's one thing when they don't know what the artist's situation is, but it's another when the artist has made it clear to everyone how much they need the work...
Hmm, I almost wonder if there's a way to have like a pre-payment setup. I don't really know how viable it is, but you could charge a small percentage of the total price of the commission before you actually start it. So say, a first time commissioner requests a piece that has a total cost of twenty dollars: Instead of working on the commission then asking for full payment, you could have them pay two dollars (10%), THEN finish the commission, and charge the remaining amount after completion.
Like I said, I don't really know how well it would work, but it THEORETICALLY could help separate some of the riff-raff from the people actually interested in paying for your work, because they've already invested a small amount into the piece/project. Some people could see it as shady though, but you could always set this policy to the first commission only.
It is indeed. I've had two or three people say that they want to commission me within a week or two and then they never spoke to me again. I went to their accounts to ask them if they still wanted to commission me or not, but I literally found on one of them that they had commissioned a ton of people so maybe they forgot or whatever, and another commissioned one other artist instead and I was like WTF. Don't say you'll do something and then not do it.
I didn't start drawing anything for them so it's all good. I don't start art unless I have payment. Unless it's a huge order, then I kind of start rough sketches so I can promise the person paying me that I have begun their order. But yeah, I only have people send one payment in full.
Right? It's like, if you ask for a commission, why would you not follow through? Don't go out of your way to request if you don't actually want the product. It's like going into a grocery store and putting a bunch of food into your shopping cart, then deciding you don't want ANY of it. I've seen people do that too... O _o
It's good that you have that pre-payment system, though. I don't really do commissions myself so I don't really know the way of the world in that regard xD
Oh my gosh, I can feel your pain here, I hate this so much too. I hate being told to hold a slot, only for the person to never pay me and leave me hanging.
This reminds me of a time when a person asked me that they wanted me to hold a slot for them because they wanted to commission me, so I did. Next thing you know, I see someone else, who draws better than me, post a commissions journal and I see the same person ask them about a commission and I'm sitting here like, "Really dude? Come on." They never told me about wanting to drop the commission and they never talked back to me for weeks.
It's a fucking scourge, dude. Like I get if people want to shop around, too, but telling someone you will be commissioning them and then going and commissioning someone else instead and ignoring that first person is shitty. Don't make promises to someone hurting for money. That's like dangling something in front of someone's face and then yanking it away. It's annoying as fuck.
